Consulting, building and training

Three kinds of work, and they often run together: a decision first, then a build, with your team learning as we go. Every engagement is me, start to finish. I also work through consultancies who need a Fabric specialist on their team.

01 / CONSULTING

Consulting

Working out what to build, whether to build it, and how. That might be a two-week proof of concept, one architecture decision nobody internally can settle, or a few days a month so the decisions keep getting made well.

Fabric POC and assessment

2 to 4 weeks · Fixed scope

Test Fabric, or an approach, on your own data before committing budget. You leave with a working prototype, recommendations and a go or no-go decision.

What's involved

Architecture and advisory

One decision, a review, or days per month

A direct recommendation on modelling approach, workspace structure, security, capacity or migration, with the reasoning written down. Or retained days so there is someone to ask as the platform grows.

Under your brand or mine

I join your delivery team as the Fabric and Power BI specialist: architecture, build, review or coaching, for the length of the engagement. Most of my recent work has come this way, through partners who needed depth on Fabric they did not have in house.

02 / BUILDING

Building

Building it, and handing it over to a team that can run it. A whole platform, or the reports and models you already have.

Fabric platform build

8 to 12 weeks · Fixed scope

Lakehouse architecture, pipelines, semantic models, governance and report standards, with the training and documentation your team needs to run it.

What's involved

Power BI transformation

2 to 6 weeks, or days per month

Reports people avoid, models that run slowly, capacity costs nobody can explain, standards that never took hold. Fixed, and the practice left with your team.

What's involved

Embedded in your team

Weeks to months

For a longer programme, I join your team as the engineer who also knows Power BI, working across analysis, engineering and reporting rather than in one of them. Useful when the platform, the models and the reports are all being built at once.

03 / TRAINING

Training

Teaching your team to do it themselves. Workshops, coaching while we build, and a course on the way.

Workshops and coaching

One or two days, or alongside a build

In-house sessions on report design, semantic model design or Fabric architecture, built around your own reports and data. Or coaching while we build, so the pattern transfers as it is made.

Course and conference sessions

Online, and at SQLBits, Data Saturdays and FabCon

A three-level Power BI course being recorded now, and talks and pre-conference workshops on semantic models, Fabric architecture and design-first reporting.

Most people arrive not knowing which of these they need, and that is fine. Describe the problem and I'll say which one, if any, is the right place to start.
