Design first
Most consultants focus on the technical architecture. I think a good platform needs solid engineering and thoughtful design, and by design I don't mean colours. I mean:
Think of the iPhone: it changed what a phone is and who can use it.
A concrete example is the semantic model toolkit on my open source page: it generates descriptions and synonyms for someone to review, and shows what a rename would break before anything is touched. I work the same way on every engagement, from a two-week POC to a full platform build.

It started as a documentation problem and ended up as an open-source toolkit: descriptions and synonyms, safe renames, and a readiness check before release.
